Touring senior living can feel overwhelming. Here are the five questions that reveal the most about the quality of care — and how John Bertram Homes answers each one.
Choosing an assisted living community is one of the most important decisions a family will make. A tour is your best chance to look past the brochure and see how a community really works — but only if you know what to ask. After welcoming families to the North Shore since 1877, we’ve learned which questions tell you the most. Here are five to bring with you, and how we answer each one at John Bertram Homes.
1. What is the staff-to-resident ratio, and how is care personalized?
Numbers matter, but so does philosophy. Ask how care plans are built and how often they’re reviewed. At our Salem and Swampscott communities, every resident has an individualized care plan developed with their family and updated as needs change — so support grows with the person, never the other way around.
2. How do you handle changing care needs over time?
A good community plans for the future. Ask what happens if a loved one needs more help, or begins to experience memory loss. Our Swampscott location includes a dedicated Reminiscence memory care neighborhood, so many residents can transition without leaving the community they call home.
3. What does a typical day look like?
Activities aren’t filler — they’re the heart of community life. Ask to see a real activity calendar and notice whether residents look engaged. From morning exercise and music to outings and seasonal celebrations, our programming is designed to bring residents together every single day.
4. Tell me about dining.
Meals are a highlight of the day. Ask whether food is made fresh on-site, how dietary needs are accommodated, and — ideally — stay for lunch. Our chef-prepared meals are served restaurant-style, with seasonal menus and options for every dietary requirement.
5. Are you for-profit or non-profit?
This shapes every other answer. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, our mission — not margins — drives every decision we make. Reinvestment goes back into care, staff, and the community rather than to shareholders.
The best tour question is simply: “Can I stay for a meal and talk to residents?” The answer tells you everything.
